ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- Gleason Fournier scored the shootout winner as the Grand Rapids Griffins defeated the Abbotsford Heat 4-3 Friday in American Hockey League action. Fournier was the eighth Griffins shooter and had a chance to win the game after Petr Mrazek came out to stop Abbotsfords Chad Billins. Fournier beat Olivier Roy stick side to clinch the win for the visitors. Teeumu Pulkkinen scored twice, giving him a team-leading 23 goals and four in two games. Calle Jarnkrok had a goal and two assists. Andrej Nestrasil had two assists. Mrazek stopped 31 shots in the win. Max Reinhart had two goals for Abbotsford (33-17-6), who have now lost three straight. Sven Baertschi had a goal and an assist, while Roy made 34 saves in the losing effort. Baertschi opened the scoring on the power play when Ben Streets wrist shot from the point was redirected between Mrazeks legs at 6:11. Pulkkinen tied the game at 16:44. After taking a pass at the blue-line, he stepped into a slap shot from the top of the face-off circle to beat Roy far side for his team-leading 22nd of the year. The 22-year-old Finn gave the Griffins the lead at 3:49. Nick Jensens shot from the top of the circle was deflected by Pulkkinen, cruising through the slot. That was Jensens first professional point. Reinhart tied the game at 16:09, taking a pass from Brett Olson and wiring a wrist shot far side on Mrazek. Jarnkroks power-play goal gave the Griffins the lead heading into the second intermission. Nestrasil found Jarnkrok in the low slot and he beat Roy bar down with just 20 seconds to play. Grand Rapids thought they had doubled the lead eight minutes into the third, but the deflection in front was a high stick and was immediately waved off by referee Trevor Hanson. Reinhart tied the game with just under four minutes to go, redirecting a pass from Baertschi around Mrazeks left pad. Grand Rapids had the best scoring chance in overtime, but Ryan Sproul fired it off the crossbar midway through the extra frame and with 35 seconds to go, Cory Emmerton shot a one-timer from the slot right into Roys crest. Maicer Izturis, whod begun to morph into the Blue Jays starting second baseman thanks to a hot start offensively, sprained his left knee in a freak accident in the first inning. It happened as he was descending the dugout steps to the bat rack. Izturis has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. It was a freak accident and while the early diagnosis is a sprain, when Izturis explains it, hes expecting the worst. "Its in the knee, I felt it pop twice," said Izturis. "Now I feel pain. Its sore right now and Im worried about that." Izturis, off to a .286/.324/.314 start, will have an MRI on Monday in Minneapolis. Infielder Munenori Kawasaki has been called up from Buffalo. Meanwhile, Colby Rasmus left the game after scoring a run in the sixth inning. He says he tweaked his left hamstring while making a running catch on a Nick Markakis fly ball in the fifth. Rasmus doesnt believe its serious. "Just to make sure its nothing big and weve got an off day (Monday) and we were up in the game, so I decided to come out just to make sure everythings good," said Rasmus. If Rasmus is forced to miss games, the timing isnt good. Hes heating up at the plate with home runs in back-to-back games and a three-hit, three-RBI afternoon on Sunday. Rasmus home run in the first inning on Sunday left the park, literally, landing on Eutaw Street in front of the famous warehouse building in right field. It was the 78th home run to land on Eutaw Street in the history of Oriolee Park at Camden Yards, which is in its 23rd season.dddddddddddd Encarnacion feels relief Edwin Encarnacion broke out on Sunday with a three-hit game, which included his first two RBIs of the season. Did Edwin feel any relief? "Big time," said Encarnacion. Manager John Gibbons dropped Encarnacion to the fifth spot in the order, moving Adam Lind up to clean-up. "Just timing," said Encarnacion of his early season issues. "Hitting is about timing. When you have the timing, you can hit. I feel a lot better the last couple of games so I hope I continue to do that." Through 12 games, Encarnacion had been hitting only .174/.240/.261. Hes still looking for his first home run. Happ to join Jays in Minneapolis Left-hander J.A.
